WINNIPEG — A crucial meeting last summer between key leaders Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey, Adam Lowry, and coach Scott Arniel charted the course for the Winnipeg Jets` current season.
Shortly after taking on the head coaching role, Arniel reached out to the captain and his two assistants, all based in Calgary during the off-season. He proposed a face-to-face meeting to discuss the team`s direction.
In mid-August, the four convened at Mercato’s, an upscale Italian eatery, for an extended lunch. Their discussion centered on evolving the Jets from a team that consistently made the regular season but struggled in the first playoff round, into a true contender for the Stanley Cup.
Scheifele, Lowry, and Morrissey, each with over a decade of experience with the Jets, collectively conveyed a clear message to Arniel.
Morrissey explained, “Our message was clear: we are veterans in our careers, part of a strong team with excellent leadership and talent. We need to be challenged to reach our full potential.” He added, “The expectation was for him to coach us with the intensity required for a championship-caliber team.”
The players emphasized the need for a higher standard of execution in all aspects of their game.
Lowry reflected on the impact of this meeting, stating to Sportsnet.ca, “Looking back at our journey and progress, it`s clear that pivotal meeting was the starting point for our transformation.”
Throughout the season, the Jets` emphasis on habits and standards has been a recurring theme in public statements from both players and coaches. These “non-negotiables” are even displayed in their dressing room as a constant reminder.
