For 31 years, Wayne Gretzky was considered the best goal scorer in the NHL, and his record seemed untouchable. However, Alex Ovechkin was able to approach this achievement and made a historic breakthrough last weekend.
In 2016, when Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet asked Ovechkin about the possibility of breaking Gretzky`s record, he didn`t even consider such an option.
`Impossible to catch Gretzky?` – Friedman asked.
`It`s impossible,` – Ovechkin replied.
Friedman continued to insist: `You could challenge him, maybe you can do it—`
`No,` – Ovechkin interrupted. `I need six more seasons of 50 goals, and I`m not sure I`ll be able to skate for another six seasons.`
