The newest PIF WTA Rankings reflect significant shifts and breakthroughs following the Miami Open, a WTA 1000 event, and other WTA 125 and ITF tournaments over the past two weeks.
Aryna Sabalenka, the Miami champion, and Jessica Pegula, the runner-up, hold their positions at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. However, Alexandra Eala made the most remarkable progress within the Top 200. The 19-year-old player from the Philippines defeated Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek to reach her first WTA semifinal.
Eala, who won the 2022 US Open junior title, had not previously achieved consecutive main-draw wins at the tour level. Her performance led to a leap of 65 positions, elevating her from No. 140 to a career-high No. 75 and marking her debut in the Top 100.
Eala`s achievement is historic for the Philippines as she becomes the first player from her country to break into the Top 100. She has a history of setting milestones for Philippine tennis, including being the first Filipina to compete in and win a match in a WTA main draw in 2021 at Cluj-Napoca. She surpassed the previous highest Philippine ranking of No. 284, set by Maricris Gentz in 1999, in July 2022.
Raducanu Returns to Top 50, Svitolina Back in Top 20
Emma Raducanu entered Miami with only three wins in nine matches in 2024. She reversed this trend with a strong run to the quarterfinals, including her third Top 10 victory against Emma Navarro.
This quarterfinal was Raducanu`s best result since her 2021 US Open victory and her first time winning four matches in a row since then. She jumped 12 spots from No. 60 to No. 48, returning to the Top 50 for the first time since September 2022.
Elina Svitolina also had a successful Sunshine Double, following her Indian Wells quarterfinal appearance with a fourth-round finish in Miami. The Ukrainian player moved up four places to No. 18, re-entering the Top 20 for the first time since May last year.
New Career Highs for Krueger, Danilovic, Kessler, Todoni
American players Ashlyn Krueger and McCartney Kessler continued their ascent in the rankings, performing well on home ground in Miami. Krueger, 20, achieved her first Top 10 win by defeating Elena Rybakina on her way to the fourth round. Kessler, 25, reached the third round after wins over Marie Bouzkova and Linda Noskova before an injury stopped her progress.
Both Krueger and Kessler achieved new career highs, with Krueger rising to No. 34 from No. 40, and Kessler to No. 42 from No. 48.
Two WTA 125 events in Antalya within two weeks saw both champions reach career-high rankings. Anca Todoni of Romania won her third WTA 125 title at Antalya 1. Having entered the Top 100 recently, she further climbed 17 positions from No. 100 to No. 83.
Olga Danilovic won Antalya 2 as the top seed without losing a set. She improved six places from No. 41 to No. 35.
Jaqueline Cristian secured her first WTA 125 title in Puerto Vallarta last week. The Romanian player advanced 15 positions to match her career-high ranking of No. 57.
Teenagers Jimenez Kasintseva, Linda Fruhvirtova Rebound
While Eala gained attention in Miami, two of her peers born in 2005 also made significant comebacks. Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, the 2020 Australian Open junior champion, had reached a career-high No. 121 in November 2022 but later fell to No. 384. The 19-year-old from Andorra reached her first WTA 125 final at Antalya 2 and climbed 21 places to No. 130 this week.
Linda Fruhvirtova has also experienced fluctuations in her ranking. After entering the Top 50 in March 2023 following her first WTA title in Chennai the previous year, she dropped out of the Top 200 by October.
Fruhvirtova returned to Miami, where she had previously made a breakthrough in 2022 by reaching the fourth round as a 16-year-old. As a qualifying wild card, she reached the third round, defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia. She continued her success by reaching the Puerto Vallarta WTA 125 final, resulting in a jump of 61 places from No. 215 to No. 154.
