Zazzaroni's Concern: Italian Players Declining, Not Recovering

The 2026/27 Serie A season has kicked off, but according to Corriere dello Sport director Ivan Zazzaroni, the situation regarding Italian players has not improved since the national team's playoff failure against Bosnia-Herzegovina. In fact, he notes a concerning decline.

Zazzaroni expresses his disappointment, stating, "I certainly couldn't have hoped for the issue to be resolved in a single summer – let's say I was hoping for an act of goodwill, a first, comforting realization – but I never would have imagined that the clubs' reaction would be what we are witnessing."

He further elaborates: "The number of usable Italians has actually decreased. I regret that Fiorentina fans didn't understand that the criticism I made on August 6th of Paratici's campaign was just an example; this year, the criticism was aimed at all clubs except one, Toro." He continues, "Yesterday, in the first four matches of the new season, 28 out of 88 players who started were Italian, thanks in large part to Monza (8). This percentage is almost acceptable, were it not for the fact that the absences of some foreign players positively influenced this figure," he points out.

"If things don't change, soon we will see Italians playing away matches surpass those playing on home soil. I've done the math, and I've identified 28 potential Italian players playing outside Italy... Some might say, 'it's better this way, they gain experience in more important tournaments than ours.' I have many doubts about that."
