Zverev's Win Secures Sixth Laver Cup Title for Europe
Alexander Zverev secured Europe's sixth Laver Cup title by defeating Learner Tien on the final day of the tournament. Zverev, the US Open champion, bounced back from a previous defeat to Alex de Minaur, winning against Tien with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 at London's O2 Arena.
Earlier, Carlos Alcaraz's performance kept Europe in contention. Following Alcaraz's match, Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik secured a doubles victory against De Minaur and Taylor Fritz, extending Europe's lead. Zverev's win then clinched the necessary 13 points for the team, making Alcaraz's final singles match unnecessary.
"I hadn't won a Laver Cup match in two years, so I'm glad I did it today," Zverev stated. He acknowledged Team World's strong performance, noting they pushed Europe throughout and were champions the previous year. "We have great team chemistry; it was a team effort. Winning as a team is the best feeling in sports, something we don't have enough of in tennis."
Tien, making his debut for Team World at age 20, forced a tiebreak in the first set. However, Zverev, ranked world number two, took control in the second set, completing the match in one hour and 49 minutes.
This marks Zverev's sixth Laver Cup win with Team Europe. He also holds the record for the most singles wins at the event, with eight victories.
