Lowe's Issues Cautious Forecast Amidst Home Improvement Spending Slowdown

Lowe's has reported mixed financial results, indicating a slowdown in consumer spending on home improvement projects. Despite this, the company has not revised its full-year financial projections downwards but has adjusted its outlook to the lower end of its previous guidance.

The retailer now anticipates total sales of $92 billion, a decrease from the previously projected range of $92 billion to $94 billion. Comparable sales are expected to remain flat, down from a previous forecast of flat to a 2% increase. Furthermore, Lowe's expects its adjusted earnings per share for the year to be $12.25, aligning with the lower end of its prior forecast of $12.25 to $12.75.

Shares of Lowe's experienced a decline of approximately 2% in premarket trading following the announcement.

In its second fiscal quarter, Lowe's reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.40, though a direct comparison to the expected $4.22 was not immediately clear. The company's revenue for the quarter stood at $25.96 billion, falling short of the anticipated $26.16 billion.

During the quarter, Lowe's recorded a net income of $2.4 billion, or $4.27 per share, which was largely consistent with the same period last year. After accounting for one-time items and including benefits from tariff refunds, the company's adjusted earnings per share reached $4.40.

Lowe's highlighted that tariff refunds contributed positively, boosting its earnings per share by 11 cents in the quarter. Total sales for the quarter amounted to $25.96 billion, an increase from $23.96 billion in the prior year. Comparable sales saw a modest rise of 0.2%, attributed in part to strong performance in professional and home services sales.

Online sales at Lowe's surged by 15.7%. However, the company noted that macroeconomic pressures for do-it-yourself customers partially offset this growth.

"While the near-term remains dynamic, our teams are executing at a high level, advancing our Total Home strategy and investing to drive growth and profitability," stated CEO Marvin Ellison in a press release.

These results come as Lowe's navigates a cooling housing market and a more cautious consumer spending environment. Competitor Home Depot recently reported similar challenges, noting a lack of customer engagement in large projects and persistent "frozen housing market conditions."
