Katie Boulter Dominates Japan Open, Advances Past Sakatsume
Katie Boulter secured a convincing win in her Japan Open first-round match against Himeno Sakatsume. Play, initially halted by rain on Monday with Boulter leading 6-3, 3-1, resumed Tuesday, allowing the British player to complete the match with a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.
Boulter commented on the interruption, stating, "Yesterday was a tough spot to end at. I wanted to play last night and continue, but with the rain, unfortunately, that wasn't possible. It meant that I had to have the same mindset again today and just try to get over the line and focus on getting through the match. I think I did that. I didn't want to be out here playing a third set so I'm pleased with today."
The 30-year-old Boulter capitalized on five of her nine break point opportunities. Despite facing 13 break points herself, wildcard Sakatsume could only convert one.
In other tennis news, Iga Swiatek has concluded her season, withdrawing from the Ningbo Open due to a thigh injury and consequently missing the WTA Finals. The Ningbo Open also saw Arthur Fery of Britain eliminated in the first round by Borna Gojo, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). Fery, the eighth seed, has struggled for consistency recently, losing five of his last seven matches.
Cameron Norrie, another British player, also exited in the opening round, falling to Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Meanwhile, Jacob Fearnley advanced in the European Open in Brussels with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Hugo Gaston. Toby Samuel lost his first-round match to Zizou Bergs, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
